The Spruce Irrigation Controller is a substitute for any typical home irrigation controller/ timer. Typically the irrigation system consists of in-ground irrigation pipes with nozzles or drip lines. These pipes connect to 24vac valves, which are wired to an irrigation controller. Spruce is a direct replacement for the controller and is wired exactly the same as any other irrigation timer that you would typically use.
The Spruce Controller is compatible with all 24VAC valves. This is the industry standard (for low voltage systems), so generally valves from all brands (RainBird, Hunter, Toro, Weathermatic, K-Rain, Orbit, and more) will be compatible with Spruce and are available at any home and garden store.
